OK, here's the situation. I work at a grocery store, and I'm a fairly friendly person, so a few of the regulars like to chat. One older fellow knows that I will be starting an MA program in archaeology this fall. But the problem is that whenever he sees me now, he always says the same stupid shit, "how's alicia the attractive archeaologist" or "how's alicia, the delicious archeaologist"? DELICIOUS?!?!? I want to run the opposite direction whenever I see him in the store. How do I politely say that this makes me uncomfortable while I'm in public and working?
Have you been in a similiar situation?

"How do I politely say that this makes me uncomfortable while I'm in public and working?"
Just take the person aside (don't do it in front of others) and just say it.
Just say something like "Hey, I know you are just joking around but some of the things you say - like when you call me attractive or delicious - make me really uncomfortable. So could you please not do that?"
End it on a positive note and it will stop.
He will probably be shocked - most people don't even know they are doing it. It's just their bizarre sense of humour or a generational or social/cultural gap thing sometimes. -

Unsu...
There was a dude at my old co-op who was tripping after he discovered I was getting a PhD. EVERY time he saw me after that he asked if I was done yet. very annoying. I did not have the understanding feelings for him you have for this older man though. I finally said to him, "we have to find something else to talk about. School is just part of my life." He didn't say anything to me at all after that, which was fine by me. I though I had perfected the "don't even look at me" face, but some people are impervious.
